As a largely loved, and easy to wear material there’s no doubt that selecting cotton fabric offers a wide range of benefits to our clients. It has inherent abilities to control moisture, insulate and provide comfort while also being hypoallergenic. As such, cotton is perfect for those in the hot and humid climates. It remains a light yet durable fabric that you cannot go wrong with. Taking care of cotton may seem like a daunting task, however in reality it is very simple.

Storage

Cotton garments should be stored in well ventilated and dry environments in order to ensure no damage to the garments. As cotton is a natural fiber, storing it in adverse conditions may result in mold or rotting of the fabric. If you have a cotton jacket, it is advised that you hang it on a coat hanger which has support for the shoulder padding in order to retain the shape of the padding. Cotton shirts and trousers can be hung on wire hangers.

Cleaning

The ideal method to wash your cotton garments is to wash them by hand under cold water with mild detergent followed by an air dry. This ensures that the quality and look of the garment will last the longest and ensures little to no shrinkages.

Since not everyone has time to hand wash each of their garments, washing them in a machine is possible, however only with cold water, followed by an air dry. We strongly advise against washing cotton garments in hot water conditions. Washing in cold water will ensure minimal bleeding of the color and air drying ensures minimal shrinkages. Using a dryer to dry your cotton garments may make the shirts wear faster than normal and cause shrinkage.

Cotton suits may require more daily maintenance. We recommend brushing down your suit with a suit brush after a day’s use to get rid of dust particles on the fabric and allow it to hang overnight. Dry cleaning them every few months is a good option. However excessive dry cleaning can also be detrimental to the garment as the high drying temperatures and chemicals used in the dry cleaning process can damage the fabric or slowly decrease its lifespan. Thus, we recommend steaming the suit every so often (once a week) as another maintenance option. Steaming also helps get rid of the many wrinkles that can build up on cotton suits.

Wool Garments

A wool suit is the most classic garment to have. It can double as a daily wear suit as well as a recreational wear suit. Ideally, wool garments should be stored in a well ventilated, dry place. As it is a natural fiber, heat and moisture can be detrimental to the lifespan of the fabric. We advise you to hang your wool jacket on a coat hanger which has support for the shoulder padding in order to retain its shape. Moreover, keeping your wool suit inside a suit bag can is also a good way to ensure it remains clean inside the wardrobe.

If you are using the jacket on a daily basis, ensure that whenever you take it off it is hung either on the back of a chair, on a coat rack or back on the hanger. This ensures that the shoulder does not lose its shape and the jacket keeps its look for the longest possible time.

Cleaning

Wool is more susceptible in capturing small dust particles compared to other fabrics. We recommend brushing down your suit with a suit brush after a day’s use to get rid of any dust on the garment and allow it to hang overnight. While brushing, be gentle and ensure you brush thoroughly. Daily brushing of wool garments can go a long way to maintain its longevity.

Never put wool garments in a washing machine. Dry cleaning is recommended. However excessive dry cleaning can also be detrimental to the garment as high drying temperatures and chemicals used in the dry cleaning process can damage the fabric or slowly decrease its lifespan. We recommend only dry cleaning the suits after every few months. As mentioned above, wool has some self cleaning characteristics in itself, thus if you ensure to brush down the suit consistently and store it correctly, this should be sufficient in keeping the suit clean before dry cleaning it every few months.

Allowing your wool garments to hang overnight is a good way to get rid of wrinkles naturally. However, we do not recommend ironing wool garments, especially suits, at home as there is a very delicate process. We strongly advise you to get your suits ironed by an expert when you give them for dry cleaning for example.
